CA Physical Education FAQs and Resources

Below are resources to help access appropriate information regarding California Ed Code related to physical education. Note: Local Board Policies may be more stringent than California Ed Code.

  • California Physical Education Self Assessment Checklist by The City Project: Describes what is Mandatory, Allowed and Recommended Policy/Practice based on California Ed Code and best/appropriate practice documents.  Specific Ed Code numbers are cited as a reference.  Can be used as a self-assessment to determine areas of need for a district or school.  Can also be used as a resource to clarify Ed Code.
  • Physical Education Framework for California Public Schools: Resource designed to support the implementation of standards-based physical education.  Includes a description of student development, standards, and snapshots of standards-based instruction for each grade level and "best Practices" for standards-based assessment, instruction, access, leadership and use of resources.  Appendices include physical education laws and regulations, biomechanic principles, motor learning concepts, a comprehensive glossary and much more!
